Nobody in Elden Ring plays a "Vagabond build". You pick Vagabond, get through Limgrave, and by the time you reach Liurnia your stat spread has drifted somewhere the class never suggested. A build here is four things: where your levels went, what weapon you swing, which Ash of War sits on it, and the talismans filling your slots. The starting class only decides how much wasted stat you carry to the end.
That matters because the wasted stat is permanent until Rennala. Every point in a stat your weapon does not scale with is a point of damage you never get back.
Vigor first, and it is not close
Forty Vigor before anything else. Not thirty, not "once I get my damage online". At 40 Vigor you have roughly 1,450 HP, which is the difference between surviving a Godskin Apostle combo and watching a loading screen.
Vigor has three breakpoints and they are steep:
| Level | What happens |
|---|---|
| 40 | First hard softcap. Gains per point drop noticeably after this. |
| 50 | Second softcap. Still worth taking, still cheaper than it looks. |
| 60 | Effectively the ceiling. Past this you are buying scraps. |
Damage stats behave differently. Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Faith and Arcane all soften at 55 and hit a wall at 80. The gap between 55 and 80 is real but small, and 25 levels spent there almost always lose to 25 levels spent on Vigor and Endurance.
Endurance is the stat people underrate. It carries both stamina and equip load, and dropping below 70% equip load for the medium roll is worth more than any single talisman.
Scaling letters, and why yours keep changing
A weapon's scaling grade tells you how much of your stat converts into damage. E is nearly nothing. S is the top. But the letter is not fixed to the weapon, it is fixed to the weapon's current affinity, and applying an Ash of War rewrites it.
Take a standard Uchigatana. Out of the box it scales D in Strength and D in Dexterity. Put a Keen affinity on it and Strength drops to E while Dexterity climbs to B. Put Blood on it and both drop to D, but you gain 45 bleed buildup per hit, which for most of the game beats the raw damage you gave up.
This is the single most common mistake in the game. Players level Dexterity to 60, keep a Standard-affinity katana, and wonder why their damage feels flat. The letter was never going to move on its own.
Ashes of War are the build
Six weapons in this game are famous. Sixty Ashes of War are worth knowing, and the Ash usually contributes more than the weapon.
Seppuku is the clearest example. It costs you a slice of health, adds a large flat bleed and attack boost, and turns any Blood-affinity weapon into a boss deleter. Paired with a Nagakiba and 45 Arcane it ends most fights in the DLC before the second phase.
Hoarfrost Stomp was nerfed and is still excellent. Frostbite procs cut enemy damage negation, so it makes your other attacks hit harder rather than doing the work itself.
Royal Knight's Resolve multiplies your next attack. On a Giant-Crusher jump attack that is a number most bosses do not survive twice.
Bloody Slash trades health for a wide bleed arc and remains the most efficient crowd-clear in the early game.
One rule: an Ash of War carries its own affinity. Slapping Seppuku on a weapon converts it to Blood whether you wanted that or not.
Five builds that hold up
Bleed Dexterity
Arcane 45, Dexterity 45, Vigor 60. Blood-affinity Nagakiba or Rivers of Blood, Seppuku on the offhand, Lord of Blood's Exultation and Millicent's Prosthesis in your talisman slots.
Bleed applies a flat percentage of a target's max HP, which is why this build scales into the endgame instead of falling off. Bosses with high poise and huge health pools are exactly where it shines. Its weakness is real though: several late bosses resist bleed entirely, and Radagon in particular will make you feel it.
Colossal Strength
Strength 60 to 80, Vigor 50, Endurance 40. Giant-Crusher or Prelate's Inferno Crozier, Heavy affinity, Royal Knight's Resolve.
Two-handing multiplies your Strength by 1.5, so 55 Strength two-handed performs as 82. That single fact is why Strength builds get to skip the 80 hard cap and spend those levels elsewhere. Jump attacks with a colossal weapon break poise faster than anything else in the game.
Slow, and it punishes greed. But few things in Elden Ring feel better.
Glintstone Sorcery
Intelligence 60 to 80, Mind 30, Vigor 50. Lusat's Glintstone Staff for raw damage or Carian Regal Scepter for efficiency. Graven-Mass and Godfrey Icon talismans.
Comet Azur deserves its reputation and also ruins fights. If you want the build without trivialising the game, Rock Sling is the honest pick. It does physical damage, which most magic-resistant enemies do not expect, and costs a fraction of the FP.
Faith Incantation
Faith 60 to 80, Vigor 50, Mind 25. Erdtree Seal, Blasphemous Blade as a sidearm because it heals you on kill.
Faith is the most flexible school in the game. It holds the best healing, the best buffs, and in Golden Vow a flat 15% damage boost you will still be casting three playthroughs later. Dragon Communion incantations pull from Faith and Arcane together, which opens a genuinely different second build.
Dexterity/Intelligence hybrid
Dexterity 55, Intelligence 55, Vigor 50. Moonveil, and honestly not much else needs saying.
Moonveil's weapon art does ranged magic damage on a melee weapon with a fast recovery. It has been strong since launch, survived several patches, and remains the easiest hybrid in the game to pilot.
Spirit Ashes carry more than you think
Mimic Tear copies your gear and stats, so it gets better as your build does. Level it and it stays useful for the whole game.
Black Knife Tiche is the other answer. Her damage scales off enemy max HP and she dodges well enough to survive long fights, which matters against bosses that flatten most summons in ten seconds.
Latenna is the pick when a boss has a long approach. She does not move, so she is useless against anything mobile, and excellent against anything that stands still.
Spirit Ashes cost FP, so a build running 15 Mind cannot afford the good ones. That is a real cost people forget when they dump Mind.
Great Runes
| Rune | Effect | Worth activating? |
|---|---|---|
| Godrick | +5 to every stat | Yes, early. It is five free levels. |
| Radahn | +HP, +FP, +stamina | Best all-round pick for most builds. |
| Morgott | Large flat HP boost | Good if you skipped Vigor, which you should not have. |
| Rykard | Restores HP on kill | Strong in dungeons, weak in boss fights. |
| Malenia | Heals a fraction of damage dealt | Fun, unreliable, needs constant aggression. |
Each needs a Rune Arc to activate and dies with you, which is why most players run Godrick or Radahn and stop thinking about it.
Changing your mind
Beat Rennala at Raya Lucaria and she will respec you for one Larval Tear. There are around 18 per playthrough, so you get roughly 18 chances to be wrong.
Use one. Committing to a stat spread you picked at level 12 is how people end up at level 150 doing worse damage than a level 90 who respecced once.
For where these builds fit into the run itself, see the Elden Ring walkthrough, and the tier list if you want the short version.
