Final Fantasy XIV job rankings are contentious and mostly wrong, because job balance in this game is unusually tight and the real differences are utility, difficulty, and how much a mistake costs the group.
Ranked for current savage and extreme content. In casual play every job clears everything.
Tanks
| Tier | Job | Why |
|---|---|---|
| S | Warrior | Best self-sustain in the game. Forgives healer mistakes and its own. |
| A | Paladin | Strong mitigation toolkit and a party shield. |
| A | Gunbreaker | Highest tank damage, most demanding rotation. |
| B | Dark Knight | Excellent burst mitigation, weakest sustained self-healing. |
Healers
| Tier | Job | Why |
|---|---|---|
| S | Scholar | Shields plus the most utility of any healer. |
| A | White Mage | Highest raw healing and damage, least flexible. |
| A | Astrologian | Card buffs raise the whole party's output. |
| B | Sage | Strong shields, punishing if you fall behind. |
Melee and ranged
| Tier | Job | Why |
|---|---|---|
| S | Black Mage | Highest damage ceiling in the game, punished hardest by mechanics that force movement. |
| S | Ninja | Party-wide damage buff plus strong personal output. |
| A | Samurai, Dragoon, Monk | Excellent damage, minimal utility |
| A | Bard, Dancer | Lower personal damage, party buffs that more than compensate |
| B | Machinist | Strong burst, no party utility |
| B | Summoner | Very forgiving, lowest ceiling |
What the tiers do not capture
Job balance shifts every major patch and Square Enix tunes aggressively toward parity. A job that sits a tier lower here is not holding a group back in anything below the hardest content.
Utility outranks damage in practice. A Bard doing less personal damage while buffing seven other players contributes more than a Machinist doing more alone.
The real answer
Play what you enjoy. This game asks for hundreds of hours and job aesthetics matter more over that span than a two percent damage difference.
Difficulty tiers, briefly
Normal raids and the main story are cleared by anything, played badly, in poorly melded gear. Nothing on this page matters there.
Extreme and Savage are where utility and consistency start to decide pulls, and Ultimate is where the ceiling jobs justify themselves.
If you are learning, pick the forgiving option in your role: Warrior, White Mage or Summoner. Optimise later, once mechanics are automatic.
Role queue reality
Tanks and healers queue instantly, damage dealers wait. If your time matters more than your job preference, that is a larger practical consideration than any tier on this page.
Job unlocks
Several jobs here are gated behind expansions or story progress, and some start at a higher level than others. That shapes what you can realistically play before it shapes which is strongest.
