Ghostwire: Tokyo is a first-person action-adventure set in a supernaturally emptied Tokyo where 99% of the population has vanished, leaving their spirits behind. You use Ethereal Weaving — hand gestures that channel elemental magic (wind, water, fire) — to fight Visitors, hostile spirits from Japanese folklore. The core exposure mechanic rewards aggressive play by letting you rip out enemy cores for instant kills after weakening them. Between combat encounters, you explore a stunningly detailed open-world Tokyo, cleanse torii gates to expand your map, and collect the spirits of vanished citizens.
This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. Follow this path to avoid common traps that stall most players.

Phase 1: Getting Started — Shibuya Crossing
The iconic Tokyo intersection and central hub of the game. Dense with spirits to collect, shops stocking food buffs, and phone booths for spirit deposit. Multiple side missions launch from here. The first area you cleanse.
Level/Difficulty: Chapter 1-2 Key Rewards: Tutorial area, dense spirit collection, shops, central fast travel hub
What to Do in Shibuya Crossing
- Learn Ethereal Weaving combat. Three elemental attack types mapped to different hand gestures. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
- Pick Water Specialist as your starting role. It's the most forgiving option.
- Core pulling restores elemental energy for the type you used to expose it. Pull cores constantly — it's both an instant kill AND your primary energy recovery method.
- Acquire your first weapons upgrade — Water Weaving or whatever's available.
- Clear all main content before moving on.
Phase 1 Checklist
- Understand Ethereal Weaving combat fundamentals
- Water Specialist selected and functional
- Shibuya Crossing main content cleared
- Ready for Tokyo Tower
Phase 2: Early Game — Tokyo Tower
A major story mission location with vertical gameplay climbing the tower while fighting Visitors. The observation deck offers panoramic views of the entire game map. Contains one of the most visually spectacular boss encounters.
Level/Difficulty: Chapter 3 Key Rewards: Story progression, vertical combat encounters, panoramic views, boss fight
What to Do in Tokyo Tower
- Work on spirit collection. The vanished population's spirits float throughout Tokyo as blue wisps. This system becomes critical from here on.
- Farm for Water Weaving if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
- Convenience store food stacks: buy melon bread (+20% weaving damage for 5 min), onigiri (+30% health), and energy drink (+25% energy recovery). Stack all three before tough encounters.
- Complete all objectives before pushing to Yasukuni Shrine Area.
- Consider whether Wind Weaver might suit your playstyle better than Water Specialist.
Phase 2 Checklist
- spirit collection integrated into gameplay
- Water Weaving acquired
- Tokyo Tower fully cleared
- Ready for Yasukuni Shrine Area
Phase 3: Mid Game — Yasukuni Shrine Area
Northern district with traditional Japanese architecture and spiritually charged environments. Stronger Visitors spawn here due to the spiritual energy. Contains the best talisman crafting materials and shrine-based side quests.
Level/Difficulty: Mid-Game Key Rewards: Rare talisman materials, challenging Visitors, shrine side quests, cultural encounters
What to Do in Yasukuni Shrine Area
- Master torii gate cleansing. Corrupted torii gates block access to areas of the map. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
- Start working toward Wind Weaving. It's the best weapon and becomes accessible around now.
- Torii gates should be your first priority in each new area. Cleansing them reveals spirit locations, side missions, and enables fast travel. Rush gates before exploring.
- This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
- Start investing in yokai encounters for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.
Phase 3 Checklist
- torii gate cleansing mastered
- Wind Weaving acquired or in progress
- Yasukuni Shrine Area fully cleared
- Ready for Underground Tunnels
Phase 4: Late Game — Underground Tunnels
Tokyo's subway system transformed into a supernatural maze. Tight corridors favor Water Weaving's wide slashes. Darkness reduces visibility, and ambush encounters are common. Contains collectible KK Investigation Notes with backstory.
Level/Difficulty: Various Chapters Key Rewards: Lore collectibles, close-quarters combat, hidden spirits, underground-exclusive encounters
What to Do in Underground Tunnels
- Finalize your build. You should be running Wind Weaver or Water Specialist with optimized gear.
- Wind Weaving should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
- The Talisman of Exposure instantly reveals all cores in a radius — throw one into a group of 4+ Visitors, then rapid-pull all exposed cores for a room-clearing chain.
- core exposure system optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
- Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Hannya's Realm.
Phase 4 Checklist
- Build fully optimized
- Wind Weaving upgraded to max
- Underground Tunnels fully cleared
- Ready for Hannya's Realm
Phase 5: Endgame — Hannya's Realm
The antagonist's supernatural dimension accessed during story climax. Reality-warping environments that shift between corrupted versions of Tokyo. The final boss encounters take place here with escalating supernatural intensity.
Level/Difficulty: Final Chapter Key Rewards: Story conclusion, final boss fights, climactic set pieces, endgame revelations
What to Do in Hannya's Realm
- Hannya's Realm tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
- Headless schoolgirl Visitors dodge sideways when you aim directly at them. Lead your wind shots slightly left or right of where they're standing.
- The endgame loop: run Hannya's Realm, optimize gear, push harder content.
- Experiment with Balanced Weaver for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
- This is where core exposure system mastery separates good players from great ones.
Phase 5 Checklist
- Endgame content on farm
- Best-in-slot gear acquired
- Hannya's Realm fully cleared
- Ready for challenge content
Common Progression Mistakes
- Ignoring core pulling and trying to deplete enemy health entirely — core pulling is faster, restores energy, and is the intended kill method for 90% of encounters.
- Not collecting spirits because it seems tedious — spirit collection at phone booths is the primary XP source, worth more than combat XP in most cases.
- Spending all talismans on normal encounters instead of saving Exposure and Stun talismans for boss fights and large groups.
- Neglecting to cleanse torii gates and wandering into uncleansed territory where the map is hidden and fast travel is unavailable.
- Using Fire Weaving as primary combat — its slow charge and small energy pool make it a specialist tool, not a main weapon. Wind should be your default.
Key Tips for Smooth Progression
- Core pulling restores elemental energy for the type you used to expose it. Pull cores constantly — it's both an instant kill AND your primary energy recovery method.
- Convenience store food stacks: buy melon bread (+20% weaving damage for 5 min), onigiri (+30% health), and energy drink (+25% energy recovery). Stack all three before tough encounters.

- The Talisman of Exposure instantly reveals all cores in a radius — throw one into a group of 4+ Visitors, then rapid-pull all exposed cores for a room-clearing chain.
