Grim Dawn Maps & Locations Guide: Every Area Covered

Complete Grim Dawn maps and locations guide. Every area with difficulty, rewards, progression order, and what to do in each zone.

Grim Dawn's world is one connected landscape rather than a set of instanced zones, and it is laid out as a long corridor with branches. Knowing which branches are optional and which are mandatory saves a lot of backtracking.

The main route, in order

Devil's Crossing, then the Burrwitch Estates and Lower Crossing. Warden Krieg sits at the end of this stretch and he is the first real difficulty check.

After the Warden: the Old Arkovian ruins, Homestead, then the Blood Grove and the Cronley's Hideout branch. Homestead is your second faction hub and worth clearing for.

Then the Steps of Torment, Fort Ikon and the Tomb of the Eldritch Sun, followed by the Void's Edge and the endgame areas.

Ashes of Malmouth adds Malmouth itself, reached through the eastern gate. Forgotten Gods adds the desert region, reached from Cairn's western edge.

Rifts and why to place them

Riftgates are the fast travel network. Activate every one you pass, without exception, because the game expects you to return to older areas constantly for faction quests and materials.

You can also open a personal rift to return to the last town, which is the main way to sell loot without walking. Use it freely.

Secret and optional areas worth finding

Steps of Torment, Bastion of Chaos and Port Valbury are the three main optional dungeons, all reached through hidden or side entrances, and all considerably harder than the surrounding zone.

They drop the best gear available at their level and they are where a fresh character goes when the campaign feels too easy.

Each has a single entrance that is easy to walk past. If you are farming, learn where they are rather than relying on stumbling in.

Shrines

Devotion shrines are scattered across every zone and each one gives a devotion point. Some are guarded, some need offerings of materials.

There are enough shrines across the three difficulties to fill the constellation tree, but not enough on any single difficulty. Clearing shrines is a normal part of a second and third playthrough rather than something to complete on the first.

Difficulty layers change the map

Normal, Elite and Ultimate are the same geography with harder enemies and worse resistance penalties for you.

Nothing about the layout changes, which means a character who has cleared Normal knows every route already. The value of a map guide drops sharply after the first playthrough, and what matters instead is knowing where the shrines and the optional dungeons are.

The rogue-like dungeons

Steps of Torment, Bastion of Chaos, Port Valbury and the Ancient Grove each need a key crafted from components that drop across the world.

They are single-entry: leave and the key is spent. That makes them a deliberate trip rather than something to wander into, and they are the most efficient gear farming in the game at their level.

Secret areas and the ones worth the detour

Several zones hide small optional caves behind breakable walls or unmarked paths. They are not required and they hold shrines, one-off bosses and chests.

The consistent tell is a dead end that seems too deliberate. Grim Dawn does not build corridors that lead nowhere by accident.

Faction territory and where it matters

Zones are loosely tied to factions, and clearing enemies in a zone raises or lowers standing with whoever opposes them. Killing Cronley's men raises Devil's Crossing standing.

That makes route choice a reputation decision as well as a progression one, particularly for the two mutually exclusive factions later on.

The Grim Dawn builds guide covers resistances, which is what actually decides whether a zone is passable.
