The Long Dark is a survival game about the cold. There are no zombies, no other survivors, and in the main mode no combat worth planning around. There is weather, hunger, and a very large amount of snow.
It is the most atmospheric game in its genre and the most patient.
Survival mode
The main draw. You drop into a region of a frozen Canadian wilderness and try to stay alive. No objectives, no ending, just an increasing number of days survived.
Everything decays. Clothing wears out, food spoils, tools break, and the regions gradually run out of the supplies you have not found yet. Long runs become about managing scarcity rather than solving problems.
The cold is the antagonist
Temperature is the mechanic everything else serves. Wind chill, wet clothing, the difference between standing in shelter and standing beside a fire.
Freezing is slow and entirely preventable, which makes deaths from it feel earned rather than unfair.
Wildlife
Wolves stalk you and will attack. Bears will kill you outright. Rabbits and deer are food.
Encounters are tense because your options are few. A flare, a fire, or a rifle you may not have ammunition for.
Wintermute, the story mode
An episodic narrative campaign with characters and objectives. It is well made and it is not why most people are here.
Survival mode is the game. Wintermute is the tour.
Where new players struggle
Moving too much. Travel burns calories and exposes you to weather, and the instinct to explore constantly is what kills first-timers.
Establish a base, learn one region thoroughly, and expand from there.
Difficulty settings
Pilgrim is gentle enough to be a walking simulator. Voyageur is the intended experience. Stalker and Interloper are genuinely hard, with Interloper removing most starting equipment entirely.
Custom settings allow anything in between.
Time commitment
There is no ending in survival mode. Runs last from a few days to hundreds, and the community's long-run records are measured in in-game years.
The regions
A dozen or so interconnected areas, each with its own character, shelters and hazards. Mystery Lake is the forgiving starting region. Others range from manageable to actively hostile.
Transition zones between them are usually caves or ravines, and they are among the most dangerous places in the game because there is nowhere to shelter.
Crafting and time
Everything takes real time. Crafting a bedroll, breaking down a fence for scrap, boiling water. The game passes hours while you do it, and hours cost calories.
That makes time a resource as real as food, and planning a day is a genuine part of play.
Presentation
The art style is hand-painted and stylised, and it ages well. The sound design does most of the atmospheric work, particularly the wind, which tells you whether it is safe to be outside before the temperature reading does.
Challenges
Separate from survival and story, these are scenario runs with fixed objectives: escape a region, hunt a specific animal, survive a set number of days under unusual constraints.
They are a good way to learn systems under pressure without risking a long survival run.
Maps and locations
The Long Dark is a first-person survival game set in the frozen Canadian wilderness after a geomagnetic disaster. There are no zombies, no monsters: just the cold, starvation, wildlife, and your own mistakes. The game is a masterclass in tension through simplicity: every match lit, every calorie consumed, and every degree of warmth matters. Survival mode is an open-ended sandbox where the goal is simply to survive as long as possible. The Story mode (Wintermute) tells a narrative across five episodes. The game's art style (painterly landscapes) creates hauntingly beautiful environments that also want to kill you.
The Long Dark features distinct areas with increasing difficulty. This guide covers every major location in progression order: what to do, what to get, and when to move on. For the step-by-step path, see our walkthrough.
Area Progression Order
| Order | Location | Difficulty | Key Rewards | Recommended Build |
|---|---|---|---|---|

Mystery Lake: Starting Area
The most beginner-friendly region with the Camp Office (excellent base), abundant wildlife, and moderate weather. Contains Carter Hydro Dam connecting to Pleasant Valley. Mystery Lake has the best balance of shelter, resources, and hunting.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Starting region |
| Key Rewards | Camp Office base, abundant deer, rifle spawn locations, workbench |
| Recommended Build | Voyageur |
| Key Equipment | Distress Pistol |
What to Do Here
- Learn the basics of temperature management.
- Collect starting resources and your first equipment upgrade.
- Clear all main content before moving to Coastal Highway.
- If you're struggling, read our beginner's guide.
Coastal Highway: Early Game
A coastline region with scattered houses and the Quonset Gas Station (good base). Beachcombing provides unique resources. The region connects Mystery Lake to Desolation Point (which has a forge). Weather is windier than Mystery Lake.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Early-mid survival |
| Key Rewards | Quonset Gas Station, fishing huts, forge access (via Desolation Point) |
| Recommended Build | Voyageur |
| Key Equipment | Distress Pistol |
What to Do Here
- Focus on mastering wildlife encounters.
- Farm for Distress Pistol if you don't have it yet.
- Complete all objectives for maximum rewards.
- Prepare for the difficulty spike in Pleasant Valley.
Pleasant Valley: Mid Game
A large open valley with extreme blizzards and the Farmstead (best mid-game base). Pleasant Valley is dangerous due to its open terrain exposing you to wind and wildlife. The Community Center and farmhouses provide scattered shelter.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Mid survival |
| Key Rewards | Pleasant Valley Farmstead, Thomson's Crossing, large hunting grounds |
| Recommended Build | Pilgrim |
| Key Equipment | Distress Pistol |
What to Do Here
- This is the main skill check. Bring an optimized build.
- Hunting Rifle becomes accessible here. Prioritize getting it.
- Master crafting from hides for the boss encounters.
Timberwolf Mountain: Late Game
A vertical mountain region culminating at the Summit with a crashed cargo plane. The Summit contains the best loot cache in the game: multiple rifles, clothing, and supplies. Getting there requires rope climbing, which damages condition. No permanent shelters.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Advanced |
| Key Rewards | Summit loot cache (best in game), Mountaineering Rope climbs, high-tier clothing |
| Recommended Build | Pilgrim |
| Key Equipment | Hunting Rifle |
What to Do Here
- Full build optimization is expected by this point.
- Hunting Rifle should be your primary, fully upgraded.
- condition decay mastery starts mattering here.
- Farm resources for the push into Bleak Inlet.
Bleak Inlet: Endgame
A coastal industrial zone with Timberwolves (pack wolves). Contains the Cannery Workshop. A forge location with a milling machine for crafting ammunition. The Timberwolf mechanic (morale-based pack attacks) makes this the most dangerous region.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Advanced-Expert |
| Key Rewards | Ammunition crafting (milling machine), forge, Timberwolf encounters |
| Recommended Build | Pilgrim |
| Key Equipment | Hunting Rifle |
What to Do Here
- This is endgame. Best-in-slot gear and a perfected build are mandatory.
- The reward loop: clear content → upgrade → push harder content.
- Experiment with Custom for variety once you've mastered the meta.
Exploration Tips
- Clear areas in order: Mystery Lake → Coastal Highway → Pleasant Valley → Timberwolf Mountain → Bleak Inlet.
- Check every corner: Hidden caches and secrets are often in non-obvious locations.
- Match your equipment: Some areas favor different equipment types.
- Read the walkthrough: Our walkthrough provides exact progression milestones for each area.
- Don't rush: Clearing an area fully gives more resources than speedrunning two areas.
