A Vampire Survivors run is decided in the first ten minutes, and specifically by whether you have picked up the passive item your weapon needs to evolve.
Evolution is the whole game. A maxed weapon is fine. An evolved weapon is roughly an order of magnitude better, and it takes three things: the weapon at level 8, the matching passive item in your inventory, and a chest opened after the ten minute mark.
Miss the passive and you spend twenty-five minutes with a weapon that stopped scaling.
The pairings worth memorising
| Weapon | Needs | Becomes |
|---|---|---|
| Whip | Hollow Heart | Bloody Tear |
| Magic Wand | Empty Tome | Holy Wand |
| Knife | Bracer | Thousand Edges |
| King Bible | Spellbinder | Unholy Vespers |
| Fire Wand | Spinach | Hellfire |
| Garlic | Pummarola | Soul Eater |
| Axe | Candelabrador | Death Spiral |
| Cross | Clover | Heaven Sword |
| Santa Water | Attractorb | La Borra |
| Lightning Ring | Duplicator | Thunder Loop |
| Runetracer | Armor | NO FUTURE |
| Pentagram | Crown | Gorgeous Moon |
Peachone and Ebony Wings are the odd pair: they evolve into Vandalier by combining with each other rather than with a passive.
The practical consequence is that your passive slots are not free stat boosts. They are evolution keys, and taking a fifth passive that no weapon needs is how runs stall at minute twenty.
Build around one weapon, then feed it
Six weapon slots and six passive slots sounds like room for six builds. It is not.
The stronger approach is to pick your evolution early, take its passive immediately, then spend everything else on the stats that weapon wants. Area for Garlic and Santa Water. Amount for Knife and Axe. Cooldown for almost everything.
Duplicator is the single best passive in the game for most builds, because more projectiles multiplies with every other bonus you have.
Arcanas change runs more than items do
Once unlocked, Arcanas are picked at the start and at intervals during a run, and a good Arcana reshapes the whole thing.
Gemini duplicates a weapon type. Taken with the right build it doubles your output outright.
Divine Bloodline converts might into healing based on your health, which turns a fragile character into an unkillable one.
Blood Astronomia adds damage based on how many enemies are near you, which scales exactly when you need it, in the late-game swarms.
Mad Groove pulls every pickup on the map toward you once every few minutes. It is how you get the items you missed.
Game Killer stops chests from giving evolutions and instead evolves things by other means. Read it carefully before taking it, because it interacts strangely with the evolution rules above.
Arcanas are why two runs with identical weapons play differently, and why the same character can feel weak one run and unstoppable the next.
Golden Eggs are the long game
Golden Eggs give permanent, stacking stat increases to a character. They come from specific stages and interactions, and there is no cap.
This is what makes the game trivially easy eventually, and that is by design. If a stage keeps killing you, farming eggs is a legitimate answer rather than a failure.
Limit Break, unlocked later, lets levels keep scaling a maxed weapon past its normal ceiling, which is where the truly absurd runs come from.
The clock is the difficulty setting
Enemy density rises on a fixed schedule, and at thirty minutes Death arrives and ends the run unless you have the tools to deal with him.
Everything above is in service of surviving that curve. If your build is not evolved by minute fifteen, the run is already behind, and the correct move is often to reroll rather than to grind it out.
For which stages to unlock first, the Vampire Survivors walkthrough covers the order.
