The Forest Tier List — Current Rankings

The Forest tier list ranking every build and equipment option. Updated rankings with detailed reasoning.

This The Forest tier list ranks every major option by overall effectiveness. Rankings factor in damage output, survivability, versatility, gear requirements, and how well each option scales.

Tier definitions: S = best in class, always a strong pick. A = strong and competitive, minor weaknesses. B = solid but clearly outperformed in most situations. C = viable only for players who enjoy the playstyle.

Builds Rankings

TierBuildRatingPlaystyle
ABuilder8.5/10Chop trees, build walls and traps, create a fortress that handles cannibal raids with minimal player intervention.
SCave Explorer9.5/10Systematically clear each cave for key items, using the map to track progress. Bring excess flares and Molotovs for cave combat.
ACombat Fighter8.5/10Engage cannibal patrols aggressively, clear camps for resources, use bone armor (from cannibal corpses) for protection.
BStealth Player7.5/10Crouch-move through the forest, apply mud for camouflage, build in secluded locations, avoid cannibal detection.
SCo-op Team9.5/10Divide roles: builders gather logs and construct, explorers clear caves, fighters defend the perimeter and escort explorers.

Detailed Builds Analysis

Builder (A-Tier)

Focuses on creating an elaborate base with walls, traps, and defensive structures. The Builder spends most time gathering logs and constructing. Defensive walls with happy birthday traps and deadfall traps create automated kill zones against cannibal raids.

Best with: Modern Axe (fastest tree chopping), Log Sled, Building Blueprints Stat focus: Log gathering speed, building efficiency, defensive placement

Cave Explorer (S-Tier)

Prioritizes cave exploration for story items and the best weapons. Cave explorers need the rebreather, climbing axe, and flashlight to access all areas. The fastest path to game completion through systematic cave clearing.

Best with: Flashlight, Rebreather, Climbing Axe, Katana, Map Stat focus: Cave route knowledge, combat skills, flare/light management

Combat Fighter (A-Tier)

Focuses on engaging cannibals directly rather than avoiding them. The Modern Axe and Katana are the primary weapons. Combat builds excel at clearing cannibal camps for bones and other resources. Escalates cannibal aggression faster.

Best with: Katana, Modern Axe, Bone Armor, Molotov Cocktails Stat focus: Combat damage, armor maintenance, Molotov crafting

Stealth Player (B-Tier)

Avoids cannibal contact entirely using stealth mechanics — crouching, mud camouflage, and building in hidden locations. Stealth play keeps cannibal aggression low, extending the peaceful early game. Less thrilling but much safer.

Best with: Stealth Armor (lizard skin + leaves), Bow, camouflage Stat focus: Stealth movement, noise management, hidden base location

Co-op Team (S-Tier)

Multiplayer teams divide roles — dedicated builders, explorers, and fighters. Co-op reduces horror (safety in numbers) and accelerates progression through task division. The 8-player maximum allows large-scale building projects.

Best with: Role-dependent gear distribution Stat focus: Role specialization, communication

Equipment Rankings

EquipmentBest WithNotes
Modern AxeCombat Fighter, BuilderThe best overall weapon balancing damage, speed, and utility (tree chopping).
KatanaCave Explorer, Combat FighterThe fastest melee weapon with the widest swing arc for hitting multiple enemies.
Flintlock PistolEmergency use all buildsA single-shot pistol found in a cave.
Crafted BowStealth Player, huntingThe primary ranged weapon, crafted from a stick, cloth, and rope.
ChainsawBuilder (logging), Combat (risky)Found in Cave 3, the chainsaw deals rapid melee damage and doubles as the fastest tree-cutting tool.

Equipment Analysis

Modern Axe: The best overall weapon balancing damage, speed, and utility (tree chopping). Found in a cave (Cave 2) near a dead explorer. Significantly outperforms the starting plane axe. Can be upgraded with teeth and feathers for additional damage and speed.

Katana: The fastest melee weapon with the widest swing arc for hitting multiple enemies. Found in Cave 1 (Dead Cave). Lower damage per hit than the Modern Axe but the attack speed makes it superior for fighting groups. The go-to weapon for cave exploration.

Flintlock Pistol: A single-shot pistol found in a cave. One-shot kills regular cannibals but requires reloading after each shot (slow). Most useful as an emergency weapon against mutants. Ammunition is extremely limited.

Crafted Bow: The primary ranged weapon, crafted from a stick, cloth, and rope. Fire arrows (cloth + booze + arrow) and bone arrows (bones + arrow) add elemental damage. Essential for hunting animals for food and skins.

Chainsaw: Found in Cave 3, the chainsaw deals rapid melee damage and doubles as the fastest tree-cutting tool. Burns fuel (found in caves and cannibal camps). Extremely noisy — using it attracts every cannibal in the area.

Meta Analysis

The current meta in The Forest centers on cannibals AI behavior and base building. Builds that leverage both systems outperform those that focus on only one.

What's strong right now:

  • Builder with Modern Axe is the benchmark. Everything else is measured against it.
  • cave exploration builds are gaining ground as players find new synergies.
  • Combat Fighter remains essential for learning hard content.

What's underrated:

  • Cave Explorer is consistently overlooked despite being the most flexible option.
  • Flintlock Pistol offers excellent performance for its investment level.

What's overhyped:

  • Pure Co-op Team builds. High ceiling but the consistency isn't there for most players.
