The Forest Walkthrough — Start to Endgame

Step-by-step The Forest walkthrough covering every phase from first session to endgame. Complete progression guide with milestones and checklists.

The Forest is an open-world survival horror game where you crash-land on a peninsula populated by cannibalistic mutants and must survive while searching for your kidnapped son. The game's AI system makes it genuinely terrifying — cannibals observe you from the treeline, send scouts to test your defenses, and escalate their aggression based on your behavior. Building a fort, exploring cave systems for story progression, and managing the escalating cannibal threat creates a survival horror experience unlike anything else. The full story unfolds through cave exploration leading to an underground research facility. Co-op multiplayer (up to 8 players) makes the horror more manageable while adding hilarious building projects.

This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. Follow this path to avoid common traps that stall most players.

Phase 1: Getting Started — Fertile Lands

The southeastern area with the most resources — rabbits, deer, berry bushes, and flat building terrain. The safest starting location due to distance from major cannibal camps. A popular first-base location for new players.

Level/Difficulty: Day 1+ Key Rewards: Abundant resources, safe starting area, flat building terrain

What to Do in Fertile Lands

  1. Learn cannibals AI behavior. Cannibals operate on an AI behavior system that evolves based on your actions. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
  2. Pick Cave Explorer as your starting build. It's the most forgiving option.
  3. Build your first base near water for drinking access and near the coast for escape routes. The Fertile Lands in the southeast is the safest starting location.
  4. Acquire your first equipment upgrade — Katana or whatever's available.
  5. Clear all main content before moving on.

Phase 1 Checklist

  • Understand cannibals AI behavior fundamentals
  • Cave Explorer selected and functional
  • Fertile Lands main content cleared
  • Ready for Snow Area

Phase 2: Early Game — Snow Area

The northern mountainous region with cold weather damage (need warm suits). Contains cave entrances to mid-game content. The snow biome has fewer cannibals but those present are more aggressive.

Level/Difficulty: Mid game Key Rewards: Mid-game cave access, warm suit materials, relative safety

What to Do in Snow Area

  1. Work on base building. Extensive building system using logs, sticks, rocks, and bones. This system becomes critical from here on.
  2. Farm for Katana if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
  3. The drying rack preserves meat indefinitely. Build one immediately and dry all meat from hunting. Dried meat doesn't spoil and provides decent nutrition.
  4. Complete all objectives before pushing to Cave System.
  5. Consider whether Builder might suit your playstyle better than Cave Explorer.

Phase 2 Checklist

  • base building integrated into gameplay
  • Katana acquired
  • Snow Area fully cleared
  • Ready for Cave System

Phase 3: Mid Game — Cave System

11 interconnected caves containing all story items and the best weapons. Caves are dark and terrifying, populated by mutants, Virginia (multi-limbed monster), and Armsy (large mutant). Systematic cave clearing is required for game completion.

Level/Difficulty: All game stages Key Rewards: All key items, best weapons, story progression, endgame access

What to Do in Cave System

  1. Master cave exploration. An extensive underground cave system contains story items, the best weapons, and the path to the endgame facility. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
  2. Start working toward Modern Axe. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
  3. Cave exploration requires preparation: bring at least 5 Molotov cocktails, 10+ flares, extra batteries for the flashlight, and full armor. Never enter a cave unprepared.
  4. This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
  5. Start investing in crafting system for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.

Phase 3 Checklist

  • cave exploration mastered
  • Modern Axe acquired or in progress
  • Cave System fully cleared
  • Ready for Sinkhole

Phase 4: Late Game — Sinkhole

A massive open-air pit leading to the deepest cave sections and the endgame facility. The sinkhole contains some of the most dangerous mutant encounters. Climbing ropes and the rebreather are required for full exploration.

Level/Difficulty: Late game Key Rewards: Endgame facility access, deepest cave loot, story climax

What to Do in Sinkhole

  1. Finalize your build. You should be running Builder or Cave Explorer with optimized gear.
  2. Modern Axe should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
  3. The rope gun (Cave 5 — submerged cave requiring rebreather) is the most important utility item. It lets you traverse rope routes in caves that are otherwise impassable.
  4. story progression optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
  5. Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Sahara Lab.

Phase 4 Checklist

  • Build fully optimized
  • Modern Axe upgraded to max
  • Sinkhole fully cleared
  • Ready for Sahara Lab

Phase 5: Endgame — Sahara Lab

The underground research facility discovered through the cave system. Contains the endgame story revelations and the final choice. The lab is the ultimate destination of the entire game's progression.

Level/Difficulty: Endgame Key Rewards: Story conclusion, final moral choice, game ending

What to Do in Sahara Lab

  1. Sahara Lab tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
  2. Cannibals learn from your behavior. If you always run, they become bolder. If you kill their scouts aggressively, they send larger war parties. Find a balance that suits your playstyle.
  3. The endgame loop: run Sahara Lab, optimize gear, push harder content.
  4. Experiment with Co-op Team for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
  5. This is where story progression mastery separates good players from great ones.

Phase 5 Checklist

  • Endgame content on farm
  • Best-in-slot gear acquired
  • Sahara Lab fully cleared
  • Ready for challenge content

Common Progression Mistakes

  • Building an elaborate ground-level base without any traps or walls. Cannibals will test your defenses within the first few nights. At minimum, build a perimeter wall with traps.
  • Avoiding caves entirely. The entire story and best weapons are underground. You cannot complete the game without extensive cave exploration.
  • Using guns freely. Gunshots attract massive cannibal attention. The flintlock pistol should be an emergency weapon, not your primary combat tool.
  • Building near cannibal camps. Proximity to their territory dramatically increases patrol frequency and raid intensity. Build at least 100 meters from known cannibal areas.
  • Not saving regularly. The Forest has a shelter-based save system — build a temporary shelter and save before risky activities like cave exploration or cannibal camp raids.

Key Tips for Smooth Progression

  1. Build your first base near water for drinking access and near the coast for escape routes. The Fertile Lands in the southeast is the safest starting location.
  2. The drying rack preserves meat indefinitely. Build one immediately and dry all meat from hunting. Dried meat doesn't spoil and provides decent nutrition.
  3. Cave exploration requires preparation: bring at least 5 Molotov cocktails, 10+ flares, extra batteries for the flashlight, and full armor. Never enter a cave unprepared.
  4. The rope gun (Cave 5 — submerged cave requiring rebreather) is the most important utility item. It lets you traverse rope routes in caves that are otherwise impassable.
  5. Cannibals learn from your behavior. If you always run, they become bolder. If you kill their scouts aggressively, they send larger war parties. Find a balance that suits your playstyle.
